Store norske leksikon (SNL), published on snl.no, is Norway’s open and non-commercial national encyclopedia, with more than 3 million unique visitors in the busiest months. SNL is extremely well known in the Norwegian population, especially among the younger generation, and people have great trust in SNL’s content.
SNL’s working model is based on open access, quality assured information written by identifiable topic experts, with updated content written in Norwegian and a clear ban on AI generated text. We aim to produce articles written for all readers, with complex knowledge presented in an accessible and balanced way. UiO is one of the members of the association that publishes SNL, and we have several topic experts and authors from ITA.
In this talk I will tell you how SNL is organised and how we cooperate with researchers from Norway’s universities to produce the best articles possible. I will highlight some of the most popular articles about astronomy written by people from ITA, discuss how encyclopedia articles differ from other popular science texts, and tell you how you can contribute to this joint project in Norwegian academia that aims to remain a stalwart champion for trustworthy knowledge.
