Molecular clouds are the cradles of star and planet formation, exhibiting a remarkable chemical diversity that raises fundamental questions about the origins and evolution of interstellar molecules. The molecules present in these clouds serve as critical diagnostic tracers, providing invaluable insights into the regions where they are detected.

In this talk, I will explore how modeling efforts improve our understanding of the formation, evolution, and distribution of molecules under various physical conditions, ranging from frigid, dense cores to high-temperature regions near young stars, as well as the remnants of dead stars.

Additionally, I will provide a brief overview of the evolution of the molecular universe, beginning with the formation of the first chemical bonds and progressing to the development of complex organic molecules.

Molecules are widespread and play a crucial role in the formation and evolution of stars and galaxies. This figure highlights representative molecules detected across various phases of stellar evolution, illustrating the richness of what is often called the ‘Molecular Universe’. Image courtesy: Das (2024)
