Panel Conversation

In connection with the exhibition, a conversation will take place between art and science: "Perceiving Permafrost", March 22, 2025, at 14.00. Participants: Taylor Alaina Liebenstein Smith (artist), Prof. Sebastian Westermann, PhD fellows Anfisa Pismeniuk and Mats Ippach (CBA).

Background

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between artist Taylor Alaina Liebenstein Smith (KhiO) and researchers from the Centre for Biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene (CBA) – Mats Ippach, Anfisa Pismeniuk, Eira Carlsen, and Alexander Eiler – along with dancer and choreographer Tim Winter. CBA researchers investigate how permafrost thaw affects biogeochemical processes, carbon storage, and greenhouse gas emissions.

How can we perceive the thawing of permafrost? In "A Feeling of Longing That Freezes and Thaws", Smith explores permafrost transformation through an artistic lens. The installation combines permafrost samples projected via 35 mm slide projectors and magic lanterns, a 16 mm film, cooling elements, and field recordings from Finnmark, where the landscape is rapidly changing.
