Eira Catharine Lødrup Carlsen selected for new art-science collaboration

Doctoral Research Fellow Eira Catharine Lødrup Carlsen—part of the Biogov project at the Centre for Biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene (CBA) and a member of the CBA leadership group—has been selected to collaborate on one of only two projects awarded in the fifth call of the REAL Art initiative at the University of Oslo.

Breathing Transcriptions: The Invisible Language of Methane

Together with artist Taylor Alaina Liebenstein Smith, Eira Catharine Lødrup Carlsen will take part in the interdisciplinary project "Breathing Transcriptions: The Invisible Language of Methane". Rooted in Lødrup Carlsen’s research on microbial activity and greenhouse gas fluxes in thawing permafrost and meromictic lakes, the project seeks to make the invisible climate dynamics of methane emissions more tangible and emotionally resonant. The collaboration will combine fieldwork, lab experiments, and metagenomics, culminating in a 16mm black-and-white infrared film visualizing these hidden processes. This recognition highlights the value of bridging science and art—and the importance of Lødrup Carlsen’s work in understanding the microbial underpinnings of climate change.
