qGAP meeting series 7th March

This week's speaker is Morten Hjorth-Jensen. Morten is a physics professor at UiO, and has worked on a wide range of topics within quantum science and technology.

Making sense of sensing?

Quantum sensing describes the use of a quantum system, quantum properties, or quantum phenomena to perform a measurement of a physical quantity.

Some weeks ago Gunnar Lange gave an introduction to sensing (in connection with a recent PRL on topological quantum sensors). Gunnar’s seminar was followed up by Kishore Thapliyal.

This coming Friday we will try to follow up this exciting topic by discussing (with hopefully some simple models) various aspects of quantum sensing.

Although being 8 years old, the review of Degen et al, Review of Modern Physics 89, 0,35002 (2017)  https://journals.aps.org/rmp/abstract/10.1103/RevModPhys.89.035002, it can  serve as discussion material for the seminar. Similarly, Pezzè et al’s article at https://journals.aps.org/rmp/abstract/10.1103/RevModPhys.90.035005 can also serve as a part of the discussion material (paper attached), in particular section 2 on fundamentals. For those who care to see more, we included slides from a workshop at CERN Feb 17-19 on sensing in high-energy physics, mainly as a source of inspiration of what is going on.

About the qGAP meeting series

Welcome to qGAP, our seminar series on Quantum Physics and Quantum Technology.

The series of seminars/lectures  are meant to cover broadly activities at UiO and elsewhere related to quantum physics and technologies, mainly from a theoretical perspective, though we also welcome experimental talks.

We aim at having regular seminars, discussions of recent articles, presentations by master and PhD students and more. We aim for this series to be a combination of research talks and journal clubs.

Educational topics are also most welcome.

Please feel free to suggest speakers, yourself included!

Get in touch with Gunnar Lange to suggest a speaker or if you would like to be included in the mailing list.

All are welcome!
