Abstract

How can science education contribute to learning for a sustainable future, and what can environmental and sustainability education (ESE) bring to science education? Although the two fields share an interest in engaging learners with sustainability challenges, they are grounded in partly different educational traditions and priorities. This raises questions about how the two fields can inform one another, particularly when ESE calls for pluralistic and interdisciplinary approaches.

In this presentation, I introduce the ESE-SL framework, a conceptual framework developed in my PhD project to examine the relationship between ESE and science education. The framework brings together core principles of ESE, the three visions of scientific literacy, and different teaching traditions. Together, these perspectives provide a lens for exploring how ESE and science education can be connected, both by incorporating ESE into science education and by considering how science education can contribute to broader, interdisciplinary ESE. I will present the key ideas behind the framework and highlight the opportunities and challenges identified through the project.

The bi-weekly ODD seminar series at CCSE

The Open Discussions on Didactics (ODD) is a seminar series usually on Mondays at 13:00-14:00 every other week (odd week numbers) at CCSE.

The seminar will be maximum one hour and is an informal arena to present and discuss learning theory, educational research and teaching experiences within computational science. To cater to the highly heterogeneous backgrounds and interests of students, teachers and researchers in our environment, we aim for seminars that introduce participants to new ideas, reflection, and discussion within a broad spectrum of educational topics.

Presentations need not be mature and polished – on the contrary, we hope that as many as possible want to share undigested observations and reflections in short presentations of varied form and topics. We hope to have enough contributions to frequently have the meetings as lightning talk sessions, where three different speakers will each give a 5-10-minute presentation followed by discussion.
