Gaute Einevoll: Computational Neuroscience

Professor Gaute Einevoll has over many years developed a very successful and popular research and educational program on Computational Neuroscience.

Can we compute how we think?

Our amazing mental capabilities arise from interactions between billions of nerve cells connected in complex neural networks in our brains. A main challenge is to understand this network behaviour and to establish connections between properties at the microscopic level (molecules and single nerve cells) and behaviour and measurements at the macroscopic whole-brain level.

Several comprehensive multidisciplinary projects have addressed this challenge, including the EU Human Brain Project in Europe.  A key notion here is multiscale modelling, that is, the use of physics-type modelling and modern computers to build a set of models bridging spatial scales from molecules to systems and temporal scales from fractions of a second to the lifetime of the animal.

In the talk I will discuss some of the challenges that must be addressed in these ambitious and exciting projects. I will also discuss possibilities for CS students to do their masters thesis work in computational neuroscience at CINPLA at UiO

As usual, pizza and refreshments will be served. There will also be a Halloween party after the seminar.
