In order to engage students in the contemporary physics enterprise, using fundamental principles to model both simple and complex physical systems, we must provide computational tools that are well-suited to these tasks. Science and engineering students in a modern introductory physics course write short Python programs that generate navigable real-time 3D animations of physical systems as a side effect of their physics calculations, using a Python module named VPython. Are equations and graphs enough? What can beginning university students learn from creating 3D dynamic physical models? Short VPython programs written by students illustrate the value of dynamic 3D visualizations in learning physics concepts. Iterative numerical applications of fundamental physics principles in mechanics and electromagnetism, coupled with real-time 3D visualization, help students develop a sense of mechanism and support reasoning in 3D.

The ICSAM project is a National Science Foundation-funded attempt at integrating computation into the high school physics curriculum in Michigan. Teachers attend a professional development workshop aimed at providing them pedagogical tools and scaffolds for integrating computation equitably into their physics classrooms. This presentation focuses on the ICSAM project's initial attempts at exploring these areas by both adapting problem-based learning design techniques to understanding minimally working program design and exploring the impact on the identity of students with multiple computation experiences when they use minimally working programs. - 17.00-18.00 Computing in science education – i skole og på universitet
