Bees are a crucial group of pollinators, and they are declining. Food production is likely already being limited by the lack of natural pollinators. To mitigate the decline we have to know how the insects are distributed in the landscape. Can we use what we know about the bees' preferred habitats and food preference to predict where they are and how they are moving? And even cooler: Can we use new DNA methods (whole genome sequencing) to strengthen or verify these models?
I'm a PhD fellow investigating the population structure and migration patterns of Scandinavian and European wild bee populations, using whole genome sequencing in conservation effort through the BEEDIVERSE project. I use landscape genomic approaches to provide a better basis for conservation efforts to mitigate the effects of human activities on insect decline.
