Academic interests
Currently I am part of the BabyBiome project as a PhD student. The project is interested in unraveling the antimicrobial resistance genes dynamics in the infant gut. Not only have infants a higher abundance of resistance genes than their mothers, they don’t have a stable microbiome yet, making it a challenging but interesting subject. My focus is mainly on the mobile genetic elements within the infants. Since it is hypothesized that these mobile elements are more often transferred from one species to another in unbalanced environments, like the infant gut. Some antimicrobial resistance genes are withing mobile genetic elements and might be easily transferred from endogenous bacteria to pathogens in infants. With this project, I am helping to uncover this mechanism by studying plasmids and other mobile genetic elements in our infant dataset, using several bioinformatic tools.
