When do we need flexible stoichiometry to explain the behaviour of the microbial food web?

CEES Extra Seminar by Tron Frede Thingstad

Abstract

A set of experiments in near-natural environments (three mesocosm an one Lagrangian experiment), is used to discuss our present conceptual understanding of nutrient transfer through the microbial part of the pelagic food web. Particular focus is given to cases where non-Redfield mechanisms seem necessary in order to explain the observations. While the outcomes of all four experiments seem possible to explain within the framework of one generic food web model, each case required particular modifications with large consequences for system behaviour. Predictability may thus seem a difficult ambition in this type of system.
