Abstract
Adaptive dynamics has stirred up considerable interest but also some heated debate surrounding the evolution of diversity, particularly when it comes to non-allopatric speciation. I start with a brief introduction to the theory of adaptive dynamics and argue that diversification by disruptive selection is common in many realistic ecological scenarios, although it need not yield reproductively isolated species. A worked example of asymmetric competition shows a classic evolutionary arms race followed by evolutionary branching and evolutionary disarmament. In the second half of the talk, I discuss some recent advances and also the limitations of adaptive dynamics.
