Fitness, population growth and evolutionary change in the wild

Friday Seminar by Tim Coulson.

Abstract

Fitness is a key concept in evolutionary biology and in population ecology. However, in age-structured populations living in stochastic environments ecological and evolutionary fitness are not equivalent and cannot easily be linked. In this seminar I demonstrate how we can start from demographic models of ecological change and extend them to understand evolutionary change by writing the fundamental equations of evolutionary using ecological metrics of fitness. I demonstrate the approach using data from red deer and Soay sheep - two studies where the approach has provided exciting results that are yet to be published.

The CEES seminar room has a coffee-machine – it is therefore recommended that you come a bit earlier and get yourself a good cup of coffee (for the price of 3 NOK).
