Habitat selection and real-world problems

Friday Seminar by Niclas Jonzén.

Abstract

Understanding and predicting the distribution of organisms in heterogeneous environments lies at the heart of ecology, and the theory of density-dependent habitat selection (DDHS) provides ecologists with an inferential framework linking evolution and population dynamics. Real-world problems such as the effect of marine reserves as a management tool in fisheries can be approached using DDHS. However, knowledge about fundamental issues such as spatial scaling and environmental stochasticity prevent DDHS from being efficiently applicable at spatial scales relevant for conservation and management.
