Is evolution predictable?

Friday seminar by Mats Björklund

Abstract

Evolutionary theory has largely been successful in explaining past evolutionary events. The question is how well we can predict future evolution given what we know today. I address this by analyzing one of the main assumptions in macroevolutionary models, i.e. the constancy of genetic parameters over time in two model systems, the collared flycatcher and the seed beetle. I will also show how evolutionary adaptation to changing conditions is strongly dependent on the exact patterns of environmental change. Finally, I will discuss if evolutionary changes are predictable at all.
