Estimating the strength of natural selection from evolutionary time series and population genetic models

Abstract

Estimating natural selection in the wild is still a major challenge for evolutionary biologists. When the genetic basis of the phenotypic character under selection is simple, it is possible to derive population genetics models from which  fitness can be estimated. I will illustrate the use of such models from two examples: directional selection during adaptation to a new environment in sticklebacks, and balancing selection on female color morphs in damselflies. Both cases reveal surprisingly strong natural selection.
