Excerpt

Jeffrey Hutchings has called his book ‘A Primer of Life Histories’. Merriam-Webster has various definitions of the word ‘primer’. It can mean a small introductory book on a subject, a short informative piece of text, or a small book for teaching children to read. The book is indeed relatively small (just passing 200 pages), but maybe Hutchings was a little modest when deciding on the title?
