About the Book: The field of drug safety and pharmacovigilance has seen significant advancements in the 21st century, becoming ever more crucial in clinical and practice settings. This book aims to bridge the knowledge gap in pharmacovigilance and drug safety, emphasizing its application to individual patient cases in clinical practice.

Each chapter is written from the perspective of various professionals including practitioners, industry personnel, researchers, and regulators, creating a comprehensive view that integrates drug safety, pharmacovigilance, and clinical practice. Topics covered include adverse drug reactions, medication errors, prescribing safety, and the various data sources used in drug safety and pharmacovigilance. The chapters are designed as self-contained learning resources, complete with learning objectives and practical case studies.

The book is an invaluable resource for undergraduate healthcare students, postgraduate students, researchers, and clinical practitioners, particularly those with prescribing responsibilities. It is also beneficial for professionals transitioning from clinical practice to specialized pharmacovigilance roles, as well as those already in pharmacovigilance looking to enhance their understanding of drug safety in clinical settings (“Principles and Practice of Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety.” Springer eBooks, 2024).

The book became available on August 6th and can now be accessed here: Principles and Practice of Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety.

Chapter Title: Safe Prescribing and Drug Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Abstract: This chapter delves into the unique challenges associated with ensuring drug safety and effective pharmacovigilance for pregnant and breastfeeding women. It guides the reader through the fundamental principles of drug safety and the use of medication among these populations, offering practical examples for clinical settings. Additionally, the chapter examines how specific evidence on drug safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women is developed and monitored, encompassing the concept of perinatal pharmacovigilance.

We are incredibly proud of Hedvig and her co-authors for their contribution to this important work!
