Theoretical physics is the programme option for students who want to understand the laws of nature and who also have the mathematical and physical foundation needed to work with them at the deepest level.
This track is best suited for students who have already performed well in demanding courses and who are looking for further intellectual challenge and deeper study in theoretical physics. Students with mostly A and B grades from their bachelor’s degree, especially in key theoretical courses such as FYS3110 – Quantum Mechanics, FYS3120 – Analytical Mechanics and Electrodynamics, and FYS3140 – Mathematical Methods in Physics, will be in the best position to benefit from what the programme option has to offer.
We work both analytically and numerically, and many of our students gain strong programming skills that they can take with them further. As a master’s student with us, you will encounter many different problems within physics as you work on your degree, and you will gain a good overview of the most advanced theories used in physics today.
We offer both analytical and numerical master’s projects. You will direct the research project that makes up your master’s thesis yourself, and the thesis is completed in close dialogue with a supervisor. Which specialization you choose depends on your supervisor, typically focusing on high-energy theoretical physics, low-energy theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, or complex classical physics. Whichever direction you choose, you will go deeply into theoretical physics.
