Organic Geochemistry Laboratorium

In the Organic Geochemistry Lab we analyse organic components in oils and environmental samples. The lab has over the years served as a research laboratory for several masters and PhD students in petroleum and environmental geosciences. The lab does not offer analyses, but the lab's instruments may by appointment be used by students and academic staff under the supervison of the lab personell.

What is organic geochemistry?

Organic geochemistry deals with chemical analysis of organic compounds in the geosphere.

The field of organic geochemistry is sub-divided into many disciplines like:

  • petroleum and coal geochemistry
  • biogeochemistry
  • environmental
  • and soil geochemistry

At the organic geochemistry laboratory at the Department of Geosciences, we use gas- and liquid-chromatographic techniques to separate organic compounds at group and molecular levels and flame-ionisation detection (FID) and mass-spectrometry (MS) for detection of the separate compounds.

The laboratory can by appointment be used for research activities and/or to assist students at the Department of Geosciences.
