The Ivar Giæver Geomagnetic Laboratory

The Ivar Giæver Geomagnetic Laboratory (IGGL) is a Norwegian national research infrastructure for geomagnetism, paleomagnetism and rock magnetism hosted by CEED, UiO. The lab provides (after application and by agreement) researchers in Norway and abroad access to state-of-the-art research facilities. The lab is located at Campus Blindern (UiO), Oslo.

The Ivar Giæver Geomagnetic Laboratory is equipped with the following instruments for paleomagnetic measurements and rock magnetic analyses:

  • Instruments for Paleomagnetic measurements:

    • WSGI (2G) Model 755 Superconducting Rock Magnetometer (SRM)

    • AGICO JR-6A Spinner Magnetometer

    • AGICO LDA-5 AF Demagnetizer and PAM-1 Anhysteretic/Pulse Magnetizer

    • Magnetic Measurements MMTD80A Thermal Demagnetizer

    • Magnetic Measurements MMLFC Shielded Rooms

  • Instruments for Rock Magnetic analyses:

    • Lake Shore PMC MicroMag 3900 Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM)

    • AGICO MFK1-FA Kappabridge with CS-4 Furnace

    • ASC Scientific IM-10 Impulse Magnetizer

The laboratory has also equipment for sampling and specimen preparation.

  • After application and by agreement: Access for researchers in geomagnetism, paleomagnetism and rock-magnetism to the research facilities, including technical assistance with paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic experiments and scientific expertise.

The Ivar Giæver Geomagnetic Laboratory (IGGL) serves the geomagnetic, paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic research community in Norway and abroad.

The lab providing access for researchers to state-of-the-art research facilities, and scientific and technical expertise.

The laboratory is a Norwegian national research infrastructure. The infrastructure is hosted by the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED), a CoE at the University of Oslo and run in partnership with the University of Bergen (UiB), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU).

The IGGL infrastructure is funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) and the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics, University of Oslo.

The laboratory can by appointment be used for research activities and/or to assist students at the Department of Geosciences.
