CO2 storage projects, 2025-2032
– Flagship activity driving novel research, innovation, and funding opportunities.
VICCO – VISTA Centre for CO2 Storage in Volcanic-Sedimentary Systems
Explore the potential for large-scale permanent CO2 storage in volcanic-sedimentary systems through carbonate mineral-forming reactions. Carbonatization may enhance the seal integrity of the reservoir and reduce reservoir leakage risks in mixed volcanic-sedimentary systems.
5 years VISTA center (2025-29) > 40 MNOK
UiO Contact: Professor Henrik H. Svensen (h.h.svensen (at) geo.uio.no)
gigaCCS – FME Centre
Norwegian Research Centre of Excellence for Carbon Capture and Storage
Facilitate research that targets billions of tonnes of CO2 stored annually.
- Mature the Norwegian Continental Shelf as CO2 storage hub.
- Targets subsurface aquifers and partly depleted HC fields.
- Major consortium of universities, institutes and industry, hosted by SINTEF.
8 years FME centre (2025-32) > 500 MNOK => UiO > MNOK 30
UiO Contact: Professor Anita Torabi (anita.torabi (at) geo.uio.no)
CO2basalt – The Njord Centre
Researching the flow and mineral sequestration of carbon dioxide in basalts offshore Norway.
An interdisciplinary center in geosciences, physics, and computational science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo
NJORD – A research centre funded by UiO and The research Council of Norway
UiO Contact: Professor Francois Renard (francois.renard (at) geo.uio.no)
CO2SafeQuest – CETPartnership
Unraveling fault properties and behavior in CO2 geological storage projects, research to:
- improve integrity risk assessment for CO2 storage sites with geological faults, offering solutions to minimize reactivation and leakage risks
- enhance understanding of fault zone dynamics through new experiments and modeling.
3 years Clean Energy Transition Partnership – CETPartnership (2024-27)
