COnjugate North Atlantic Margin (CONAM) (completed)

The purpose of the CONAM-project is to refine and improve the understanding on the crustal architecture, basin configuration and development of the Lofoten-SW Barents Sea and NE Greenland margins, and resolve the Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic structural and stratigraphic conjugate margin evolution.

In addition, through this analysis to elucidate the operating geological processes on conjugate rifted and sheared passive margins, which can be applied as analogues to other similar margins worldwide. The aim of this study is to integrate seismic reflection and wide-angle refraction profiles, crustal velocities, and potential field data in order to refine and update the composite structural map for the conjugate Lofoten-SW Barents Sea and NE Greenland margins and provide a series of conjugate crustal transects across the main margin segments. The structural map and the transects, combined with plate reconstructions, will be used to synthesize and describe the crustal structure, and the regional structural and stratigraphic framework of the NE Atlantic province. Particular focus is on margin segmentation and rift-shear interactions, as well as on the wavelength, amplitude and timing of vertical movements during Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic times.

The project is funded by Statoil and Eni Norge.
