Research Interests

Birthe’s research interests revolve around entrepreneurship, institutional theory, and novel organizational phenomena. She studies the fundamental social, institutional, and organizational underpinnings that shape new new market fields, innovations, and novel forms of organizing. She focuses on efforts to gain legitimacy for novel economic activities and innovations, and examines the social processes and values out of which novel organizational forms and collaborations arise and are sustained. Empirically, her research often addresses the interface between business and society as well as periods of transitions, such as the sustainability and digital transition.

Background

Birthe is an Associate Professor at the University of Oslo. She holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Regensburg, Germany. From 2013 to 2015, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University. She has also been a visiting scholar at the Leeds School of Business at Boulder, Colorado. Birthe has research and teaching experience from universities in the US, Germany, Norway, and Austria. Within the section of Digitalization and Entrepreneurship, she is the leader of the research cluster "Entrepreneurship".
