ENVAMR Building new science to monitor and predict environmental antimicrobial resistance: Case of rivers in India

The ENVAMR project addresses the urgent global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by focusing on environmental AMR in the Ganges River, Bihar, India—a recognized hotspot with minimal surveillance.

The project will build an integrated One Health data ecosystem linking environmental, social, and health data with antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), and apply advanced AI/ML models for monitoring, prediction, and risk assessment. Through large-scale sampling, citizen science, and digital tools, ENVAMR aims to generate early warning systems, define safe ARG thresholds, and support evidence-based policy interventions. The interdisciplinary collaboration across Norway and India will produce scalable methods for other low- and middle-income countries, advancing both science and public health.
