GRNS_2: Field test of Lunar ISRU instrument (CLUNGAS mobile demonstrator, TRL6 test)

We are planning to send a Gamma-ray and Neutron Spectrometer (GRNS) to the Moon.

To prepare this mission, the measurement principle for abundance mapping needs to be demonstrated on Earth.

The objective of the project are:

  • identify H-rich soils

  • identify elements

We are building instrumentation for mapping of the lunar surface for elemental abundance (finding water on the moon). This thesis aims on demonstrating the capabilities of gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer CLUNGAS in the field, taking spectral measurements of soil with and without water enrichment. A mobile instrument version was developed in earlier theses, so this thesis is the continuation of this project.

The tasks include:

  • functional measurement in the lab,
  • development of a suitable test setup,
  • simulation of the expected soil response (scripts are provided)
  • test plan and test conduction, as well as
  • scientific data analysis.

If it seems suitable, a field trip to geologic interesting areas in Norway can be considered.  This topic can be shared between two students, the focus of the individual thesis can be set on either test setup building or simulation and data analysis. Please discuss your preferences with Anja.

This project can be either 30 or 60 credits.
