The newly launched Norsat-4 satellite, designed and commissioned by FFI, is monitoring ship traffic using an optical camera. The ship detection probability and the false alarm rate will depend on observing conditions such as viewing angle, sea state, presence of icebergs and so on. The student will work on a subset of these issues, to be agreed when the work starts. The work can involve recording of images with the satellite, processing of the images using AI techniques, and interpretation of the results in terms of the physical information collection. The goal is to improve the Norsat-4 detection statistics for difficult observation cases.
This project is offered by FFI and is subject to FFI acceptance criteria. Contact person at ITS is Torbjørn Skauli.
