What is "Life After Studies"?
We invite former students back to the Department of Chemistry. They will share their experiences and provide insight into the tasks and responsibilities at their current workplaces, along with the career paths that led them there.
The purpose of "Life After Studies" is to give you, as a student, a glimpse into some of the many job opportunities available with a degree from the Department of Chemistry.
The event is open to everyone, free of charge, and does not require any registration.

Speakers
About Torunn Kjelstad
- Degree: PhD
- Position: Head of the Solar Power Systems Department
- Company: Institute for Energy Technology (IFE)
Torunn:
"After completing a Master's degree in Materials, Energy, and Nanotechnology, I worked as a consultant for a few years, but I missed research and problem-solving too much. This led me back to UiO for a PhD in semiconductor physics. From there, I moved into solar power systems, where I have researched floating solar panel systems.
I've always valued industry-related research and the opportunity to communicate my findings, which I have truly experienced at IFE."
Torunn's presentation
"In my talk, I'll share my journey to where I am today and discuss the experiences that have been significant for me in my career. Hopefully, I can motivate students to try new things and take the plunge."
Keywords for the presentation:
- Transition from researcher to department head
- Position as head of the Solar Power Systems Department at IFE
- Competitive advantages provided by her education in the role of department head at IFE
- The company IFE
About Nico König
- Degree: PhD in Physical Chemistry
- Position: Senior Analyst - Corporate Strategy
- Company: Statkraft AS
Nico:
"After completing my bachelor's and master's degrees in physics in my hometown of Dortmund (Germany), I longed to explore the world. What was meant to be a short trip to Norway to finish my PhD at the Department of Chemistry (UiO) turned into seven years—and counting.
I quickly realized that I didn't want to pursue an academic career and, somewhat by chance, found my dream job at Statkraft. Now, I work as an analyst in the corporate strategy department, exploring how the Green Transition will unfold."
Nico's presentation:
"My talk will focus on my somewhat unconventional career path. It's okay to try different things, and it’s often worthwhile, even if there's a cost. Despite your best planning, things will likely turn out differently anyway!"
Keywords for the presentation:
- Experiences with studying abroad
- Research topics during PhD and PostDoc
- Reasons for not pursuing a career as a researcher
- The dream job as an energy analyst
