About the Department

The Department of Chemistry is an academic research institute at the University of Oslo that conducts highly ranked research and research-oriented education. The focus of the department is on studies in sustainability, renewable energy, life sciences, and interdisciplinary approaches.

The department offers two bachelor's programs, four master's programs, as well as continuing education and professional development opportunities. The Department of Chemistry is also home to the Hylleraas Centre, a center for excellence in research on molecular quantum chemistry. Research in material chemistry at the Department of Chemistry is organized within the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology.

The department has a large, internal contact network at UiO, and not least externally with Norwegian and international universities, with the Norwegian academic sector and with Norwegian and international business.

The Department educates graduates for business, public administration and the university academic sector, but also for the public school system and academia.

A large and increasing portion of activity is externally financed.

The Department is host for a centre for research-based innovation in the area of Innovative natural gas processes and products (inGAP) and shares a centre for outstanding research, the Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences with the University of Tromsø. The Department also has considerable stock in a centre for renewable energy with emphasis on solar cells, and is coordinator for two large EU projects.

The Department of Chemistry currently has 123 employees (pt. Dec. 31th, 2024).
