Abstract
Lanthanide-based hybrid organic-inorganic materials fabricated by atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) offer precise control over nanoscale architecture, enabling the design of luminescent thin films with tunable optical properties. These hybrid systems combine the narrow-band emission and conversion properties of the inorganic component (lanthanide ions) with the absorption strength of the organic component. One promising application is photon upconversion, which can enhance photochemical hydrogen production by converting low-energy photons into higher-energy emission. The incorporation of porphyrins as visible light absorbing antenna molecules into these layered structures can significantly enhance light harvesting and energy transfer efficiency to the lanthanide centers. The ongoing SunUP project investigates this strategy by exploring the integration of porphyrins into lanthanide-based thin films using the ALD/MLD technique.
