Abstract
Each year, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) host a summer school program aimed at undergraduate students around Europe. This program consists of a set of introductory lectures on synchrotron and neutron techniques, visiting areas such as magnetism, materials science, soft matter, structural biology, imaging, etc. along with an extensive experimental project in collaboration with one of the research groups at either the ESRF or the ILL.
My project was completed at the Nano-analysis beamline, ID16B, under the supervision of Dr. Sandra Benter and Dr. Mateus Gruener Lima on the use of X-ray nano-tomography and X-ray fluorescence to explore the structure of recycled paper for use in electronics as a more environmentally friendly alternative to printed circuit boards (PCBs). These results uncover some of the inherent uncertainties surrounding the production of the samples, giving vital information on their improvement.
