Kreeringssammendrag/Conferral summary

Main research findings

In the history of inorganic chemistry, researchers have primarily focused on controlling the properties of the materials by altering the cation lattice. However, recent advances in inorganic chemistry have been made by utilizing multiple anions to further influence the material's properties. The combination of two or more anions can also, in many cases, lead to the synthesis of compounds featuring novel crystal structures.

The main focus of the work performed during this PhD has been the synthesis and characterization of novel oxide chlorides with low-dimensional crystal structures. The thesis includes a wide variety of different synthesis approaches to target low-dimensional crystal structures, with the primary approach being the combination of a p-block element containing a stereochemically active lone pair and mixed anions. Research within this topic is important, as low-dimensional materials show promise in a wide range of different applications owing to their electronic, optical, and magnetic properties. This work resulted in the discovery of six novel oxide chlorides, five of which featured novel crystal structures.
