About

On the verge of the millennium, Paterson provided a detailed account on the magnificent progress that had been achieved concerning the interplay of Groupoids, Inverse Semigroups, and their Operator Algebras over the preceding two decades. Almost two decades later, it has become apparent that his book is not a tombstone but a foundation stone for beautiful and powerful theories to come. Following

  • the ICMS workshop "Applications of Operator Algebras: Order, Disorder and Symmetry", 06/2017, Edinburgh (UK), and
  • the CARMA workshop "Interactions between Semigroups and Operator Algebras", 07/2017, Newcastle (AU),

this event marks the third venue in a row of meetings to use the momentum of recent advances in order to provide a clear vision on new targets in this interdisciplinary field. The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts from the different disciplines to share their insights, to identify central questions, and to initiate the development of novel approaches to these. The workshop's content will feature discussions on

  • applications of non-commutative Stone duality,
  • applications and extensions to the theory of Zappa-Szép products,
  • C*-algebras associated to left cancellative categories,
  • discrete inverse semigroup algebras à la Steinberg or Exel-Pardo,
  • equilibrium states on C*-algebras - the algebraic approach vs. the groupoid approach.
