During the past 25 years there has been a significant activity constructing and analyzing C*-algebras and C*-algebraic dynamical systems from semigroups of number theoretic origin. Among these are the semigroup C*-algebras of the affine semigroup of the ring of algebraic integers in a number field, which are closely related to the Bost-Connes systems giving a thermodynamic interpretation of the Riemann and Dirichlet zeta-functions. The K-theory of the associated boundary quotients has been computed and also the phase transition of equilibrium states at low temperature has been exhibited via a natural parametrization. There is an intriguing, and still not understood, parallel in that the same C*-algebra lies at the heart of the solution of both problems. The goal of the master class is to introduce the participants to these and related topics lying at the intersection of several branches of mathematics.

Connes' embedding problem is one of the long standing open problems in Operator Algebras. Since it was raised in 1976, several equivalent formulations, seemingly unrelated to it, have been found, also in other areas of mathematics. In particular, it is equivalent to the (weak) Tsirelson problem in Quantum Information Theory.

The aim of the winter school is to upgrade the knowledge of all operator algebraists at NTNU and UiO, in particular master and PhD students, on these important topics and to review some of the recent developments.

Noncommutative geometry aims to use geometric insight in studying phenomena that are beyond the reach of classical geometry and analysis, using functional analysis and algebra as primary rigorous tools. Over the years it has been applied to a variety of problems, from index theory for foliations, to the Novikov conjecture, quantum Hall effect, standard model, analysis on quantum groups, and many more. The goal of the one-day seminar is to use the opportunity provided by the visit of Adam Rennie from Australia to report on recent advances in the area. Another goal is to strengthen ties between the operator algebra groups in Oslo and Trondheim.

The 17th Danish-Norwegian workshop in Operator algebras will take place at Lysebu (Oslo), January 5 - 8, 2017, with support from the Foundation for Danish-Norwegian Cooperation. It will start with lunch on Thursday, January 5, and end after breakfast on Sunday, January 8.

One day of the workshop will be devoted to commemorate our dear colleague and friend, Ola Bratteli, who passed away in 2015 and would have turned 70 in October 2016. Ola’s nearest collaborators over the years (George Elliott, David Evans, Akitaka Kishimoto, Palle Jorgensen and Derek Robinson) will then give talks reflecting the great impact of Ola’s work within several topics (e.g. AF-algebras, derivations, C*-dynamical systems, mathematical physics, wavelets).

Participation is possible only by personal invitation from the organizing committee.

The programme will be made available around the beginning of December.
