Research profile

I am a Principal Investigator and materials scientist at the University of Oslo, where I lead an independent research programme on functional oxides for sustainable energy technologies. My research focuses on understanding and controlling the interplay between ferroic order, microstructure, and functional properties in complex oxides.

Supported by two competitively awarded Research Council of Norway projects (22 MNOK total), we combine advanced ceramic processing with structural, electrical, and magnetic characterization to engineer ferroic domains and microstructural features for next-generation solid-state cooling technologies, capacitors, and actuators.

My research is strongly collaborative and includes ongoing work with international research groups at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA), ETH Zurich (Switzerland), and the Institute of Science Tokyo (Japan).

My work has been recognized through several international awards, including the Edward C. Henry Award of the American Ceramic Society and the Electroceramics Young Researcher Award. I currently serve as the elected spokesperson of the Functional Materials Section of the German Physical Society (DPG).

Academic background and experience

My background is in materials science and experimental materials physics, with a focus on ceramic and ferroic materials. I studied Materials Science with a specialization in Glass and Ceramics at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and received my PhD (Dr.-Ing.) from TU Darmstadt, where I investigated polarization reversal in polycrystalline ferroelectrics.

Following my PhD, I joined NTNU as a Feodor Lynen Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and established an independent research direction on polycrystalline functional oxides. My work has focused on understanding how grain boundaries, strain, crystallographic orientation, and finite-size effects influence ferroic order and functionality.

I subsequently expanded this approach from ferroelectric domain physics to magnetic and multiferroic hexagonal oxides, investigating the interplay between microstructure, magnetic ground states, and magnetocaloric properties. This development forms the basis of my current research on functional materials for cryogenic solid-state cooling.

In 2026, I joined the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) at the University of Oslo as a researcher and principle investigator, where I lead an independent research programme on functional oxides.
