Fredagskollokvium: Protima Rauwel: How do we observe nano objects?

The presentation mostly consists of understanding what ‘small’ means in today’s nanotechnology world. When you go down to 1 millionth of a meter the question you ask is, can we actually see something that small? The answer is yes, with an instrument called a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Starting from the human eye, we will cover the different methods for observing objects of various sizes to zero on upon the nanometer scale. With such an instrument it is possible to go further down and observe columns of atoms and atomic distances as small as 0.8 Å. By providing concrete examples, how one is able to pin point different atomic species will be explained. In fact, an instrument such as a TEM is indispensable in our nano world. The major issue is showing that your object is first nanosized and second it’s physical properties are modified by the nanosize as ‘tiny’ and ‘huge’ objects do not behave in the same manner. Mer info kommer.
