Nils Roll-Hansen (Filosofisk institutt, UiO): Why the distinction between basic and applied research is important in the politics of science



In recent decades it has often been claimed that there is no important difference between basic and applied research. I will describe a way of conceiving the difference which implies different criteria of evaluation, and then exemplify and discuss some problems that can arise when the distinction is neglected
