qGAP seminar series: Preparation of orthogonally squeezed vacuum states with applications in quantum error correction

This week, Marius Kalleberg Hope will tell us about how to prepare squeezed states. Marius is a PhD student at NSM and USN who is currently visiting us at CCSE as well. Abstract:

Efficient preparation of non-classical states in harmonic oscillators is central to many quantum technological applications in sensing and information processing. Motivated by recent progress with superconducting qubits coupled to mechanical modes, I will present a protocol to prepare superpositions of orthogonally squeezed vacuum states in the mechanical mode.

The orthogonally squeezed states exhibit a discrete rotational symmetry in phase space, and this property can be used to protect quantum information by encoding a logical qubit into the symmetric and antisymmetric superposition states. I will discuss how this encoding can be classified within the general framework of bosonic rotation codes (https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevX.10.011058) and how this framework can be used for quantum computing more generally.

About the qGAP seminar series

We aim to have a biweekly research seminar, with various people presenting research results, or discussing papers in a journal club style.

Every other week, however, we will have Francesco Massel from USN leading a discussion-style journal club on theoretical quantum sensing.

You can find the approximate schedule for what will be discussed in the various weeks here: Lecture plan Sensing theory.xlsx

Ideally, everyone would have read the weekly reading before coming to the seminar, as they will be structured as a discussion rather than a lecture. We particularly encourage Master's students to come.

The seminars are at 14.15 in the CCSE seminar room (4th floor Physics building, East Wing), as per usual

If you have something you would like to present (whether own research or a journal-club style talk), please do not hesitate to get in touch!

A Zoom link for the seminar is available from:
