Academic Interests

My academic interests are within the area of pharmacology, involving the effects of drugs. Our research group (ProTarg; Proteolytic Enzymes as Drug Targets) is studying proteolytic enzymes, which are enzymes cleaving other proteins and thus, either activate or degrade the substrate proteins. The research group is particularly interested in cysteine proteases (legumain, cathepsins) and their roles in normal physiology and diseases (pathophysiology). Main projects involve studying the interplay between and drug effects on cysteine proteases and their endogenous inhibitors (cystatins) in atherosclerosis, cancer and osteoporosis.
