Clinical pharmacy

The research group`s overarching goal is to study the effect of tailored drug therapy to the individual patient, on health outcomes. Our main focus is on patients with multiple long-term conditions and complex drug treatment.

The goal of clinical pharmacy is to optimise the drug therapy to the individual patient. To achieve this, the clinical pharmacist collaborate with both the patient and with other healthcare professionals. Clinical pharmacy comprises such patient centred work both in hospitals and in the primary care.Patients with multiple long-term conditions and their treatment needs constitutes one of the main challenges to the heathcare services today.

Our research is well aligned to the following of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

Text: 3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. Optimising the drug treatment will improve the patient's health and can reduce the risk of hospital readmissions. In our research we have shown that clinical pharmaceutical interventions improve the quality of the patient's drug treatment and increase overall survival. This is in alignment with the UN SDG 3.4, to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment. 9 AND INFRASTRUCTURE. Our research includes healthcare services innovation. We use design thinking methods to develop a sustainable healthcare service that provides patients with multiple long- term conditions a better transfer of care from the hospital to their primary residence. The main goal is to strengthen the patients' self-management of medications. 10 REDUCED INEQUALITIES. Drug treatment provided to patients with multiple long-term conditions often lacks sufficient evidence, as these patients tend to be excluded from clinical trials. Our research aims to improve the drug treatment and healthcare to these patients and thereby contributes to reduce health inequalities. 17 PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS. Our research is interprofessional by nature. Interprofessional collaboration is essential in order to meet the current challenges in the healthcare system and to build a sustainable healthcare service.

The research group uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods, as well as methods of innovation like design thinking. Several of our projects classify as health services research and are research on complex interventions.

The research group has established collaboration with a broad academic environment, with several hospitals and hospital departments, hospital pharmacies, the Faculty of Medicine, UiO, the UiO Growth House, and with other universities and research institutions in Norway and abroad. We want to strengthen our collaboration with researchers in the social sciences, implementation research, the National Network for Health Services Research, and e-health research.
