Career opportunities

After having completed a master's degree you will, in addition to solid knowledge of physics, also have acquired significant training in analytical methods and way of thinking, also programming and use of advanced computer tools.

Many of our master’s students, who have distinguished themselves academically, go on to pursue doctoral studies (PhD), both in Norway and internationally, not only in theoretical physics but also in other areas of physics. See information about PhD - education for becoming a researcher.

Another natural step after the master’s degree is to build on it with a one-year programme in practical pedagogical education, which qualifies you for work as a high-school (videregående) teacher. Many people with a strong background in theoretical physics find it rewarding to convey demanding science and mathematics content to motivated students.

Others among our students pursue careers in which in-depth problem-solving, modelling, conceptual precision, and abstract thinking are important. Some recent examples include data analyst (modelling, machine learning), consultant, engineer/researcher, technical staff member, journalist, and entrepreneur.
