How to use ivan

Bildet kan inneholde: fugl, nebb, pingvin, leketøy, flygeløs fugl.

ivan is a powerful server at Dept. of Geosciences. It has 80 CPUs (2 20-core Intel Xeon Gold 6248 @2.50GHz, with hyper-threading), and 1.5 TiB memory. It also has a fast, FC-connected NVMe-disk for scratch use, and a Nvidia Tesla T4 card with 16GB GPU memory and 2560 CUDA cores.

ivan is somewhat slower than mimi for CPU-bound jobs. One user reported 22-24 hours for a single-CPU job, vs. 16-17 hours on mimi; suggesting mimi is about 40% faster.

CUDA speeds has not been compared. (If you have some numbers, please let us know).

ivan runs RedHat Enterprise Linux 9.

ivan is named after Ivan Rosenqvist

Access & Use

ivan is free to use for all users at Dept. of Geosciences. If you are unable to log in, please get in touch.

There is no CPU quota or queuing system. You just run your jobs, and take care not to overwhelm the available resources.

To log in from a terminal window on a Linux or Mac machine, or from Windows with WSL and OpenSSH, use the command

ssh username@ivan.uio.no

where username is your UiO username.

If you are outside the UiO network, you must use a "jumphost":

ssh -Jusername@morgoth.uio.no username@ivan.uio.no

See links below for ways to simplify this.

Do's and don'ts

  • As a rule of thumb, don't use more than half of the available resources (CPUs, memory, scratch space).
  • Need to run something super-heavy? Run it during the night, or weekends.
  • Check the load before you start a heavy calculation, and occasionally during execution. Consider interrupting or pausing your processes if resources become scarce.

Still, ivan is usually used less than mimi. If you have a large job that takes a lot of memory and can benefit from ca. 50 parallel threads, consider using ivan.
