Talks
Hylleraas Software Platform
Bin Gao (Senior Researcher, Principal Investigator, Hylleraas Centre, UiT)
The Hylleraas Software Platform is an ongoing project aimed at seamlessly linking the many software development and computational activities at the Hylleraas Centre, in order to pave the way for advanced multi-scale simulations spanning time scales from atto- to milliseconds and length scales from single atoms to billions of atoms.
The talk of the HSP will briefly present the goals and personnel of RT0, and will recap the use of HSP in Hylleraas School 2024. Further developments after the school will also be summarized.
Grant proposal writing (1): Motivation-Opportunities-Encouragement
Asbjørg Dyveke Johnsen (Research adviser, UiO)
Dyveke is a research adviser at the Institutt for informatikk (IFI) at UiO. She specialises in external funding, project management, and research support, with a focus on ethics, compliance, and EU programs such as Horizon 2020 and the ERC.
In this talk, Dyveke will explore how to turn various ideas into relevant research questions and identify suitable calls for proposals. She will also discuss how proposals are perceived by external reviewers and the crucial role of support teams and feedback from colleagues and senior reviewers. Key aspects covered will include: the relevance of the idea, the importance of a good preliminary sketch, the impact of the research question on the project plan, and the review of the current state of the art. Additionally, Dyveke will address writing for a general audience, tracking your plan, collaborating with partners, and navigating different funding calls and their specific requirements.
Grant proposal writing (2): Information about the ERC, MSCA and FRIPRO calls
Per Magnus Kommandantvold (Special Adviser, RCN)
Per Magnus is a national contact point (NCP) for Horizon Europe at the Research Council of Norway (RCN). He has extensive expertise in International research and innovation (R&I) policy and funding, in particular on EU issues, with vast competence on researcher mobility, research facilities use and development, excellence instruments, among other areas.
In this talk, Per Magnus will provide an overview of the ERC, MSCA, and FRIPRO calls, covering key details and opportunities for researchers.
Responsible use of Generative AI in research
Simen Kvaal (Senior Researcher, Principal Investigator, Hylleraas Centre, UiO)
Generative AI tools (GenAI for short) have become important tools in productivity and research in a matter of 1-2 years. They include Large Language Models like the GPT-4o model by OpenAI (“ChatGPT”) commonly used today, Github CoPilot, image creation models like Midjourney and DALL-E, and more. I will present an overview of GenAI tools, possible uses in research, and discuss the ethics of such usage, with national and international guidelines for ethics in research as backdrop.
Factual truth, contingent truth, and scientific evidence - a brief excursus around the philosophical problem of knowledge
Michele Cascella (Professor, Principal Investigator, Hylleraas Centre, UiO)
There exists Truth? What is, indeed, truth? Can we establish with certainty that some statement is objectively true or false? These are some of the most fundamental questions that have been haunting the finest minds of humankind since the beginning of History. In this talk, I will introduce some of the fundamental milestones in the history of thought that have shaped intellectual exploration, presenting a few of the most famous problems related to the flourishing of and the crisis of Logics, to the philosophical bases of empiricism, the establishment of the scientific method, and to its limitations.
My journey in theoretical chemistry - experiences and tips
Trygve Helgaker (Emeritus Professor, Hylleraas Centre, UiO)
In this talk, I will present a concise account of my career in theoretical chemistry, highlighting key experiences and challenges that have shaped my professional development. I will share lessons learned from both successes and setbacks, offering advice for early-career researchers as they navigate their own paths in the field.
5 Minutes-Presentations (5MT)
As tradition, all Ph.D. and Masters students attending the Hylleraas Annual Meeting participate in a competitive challenge to present a compelling presentation on their research topic and its significance in just five minutes.
If you are taking part in the 5MT, please send a title, your slides (in pdf format!), and your node (UiO/UiT) to o.m.bohle@kjemi.uio.no with the subject line 5MT - 2024 by Sunday, August 18.
Here is the presenting order for the speakers. Please sit in the according order in the seminar room to speed up the turnover.

Outdoor activity
We suggest the following options:
- organised visit to Hadeland Glassverk (Hadeland Glassworks): inform Marinella/Oliver if you would like to attend;
- hike to Sølvsberget hill: check the way on Ut;
- visit to the Søsterkirkene (Sister's Church).
Special thanks to Samiran Sen for helping in the organisation.
