Current position

I work as a Researcher in Bioinformatics at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. I am also employed as a Senior Lecturer at UiO where I teach bioinformatics in addition to research and supervision.

Academic interests

I am interested in the evolution of eukaryote cells. Particularly in how the great diversity of single-celled eukaryotes evolved.

In my recent projects I have tried to understand the evolution of multicellular animals from single-celled ancestors - one of the Major Transitions in evolution. I have specifically focused on the significance of gene regulatory elements such as microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs. 

Other projects I am involved in focus on the evolution of cell morphologies in various groups of single-celled eukaryotes (protists), and the evolution and ecology of protists and their transitions between different aquatic habitats. I have studied the species diversity of protist groups such as Radiolarians, Telonemia, Perkinsea, and Haptophytes.

The Methods I use are mostly transcriptome and gene expression analyses, single-cell genome and transcriptome sequencing, environmental sequencing, and phylogenetics.
