"Towards pathways regulating acute cold stress in neurons"

Suman Kumar (Postdoctoral Researcher, Ciosk group, BMB, IBV)

Cells are routinely exposed to various physical stressors and have therefore evolved different mechanisms to counteract stress and restore homeostasis. While the positive effects of mild hypothermia is well documented, deep hypothermia is important in the context of organ transplantation and may even have potential implications in neurodegeneration. Although therapeutic hypothermia is widely used, the accompanying pathways that regulate cold and recovery-induced injuries is not well known. Here we set to identify the pathways that regulate cold stress in human neurons. For this, we used LUHMES cell line (dopaminergic type cell) to study the effects of acute cold on neurons. In the seminar, I will present some of the preliminary data from the project and discuss future prospects.
