Viktoria Stray is a Professor of Software Engineering at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo. Her research concerns how teams build software: coordination, agile practices, autonomous teams, global and large-scale development, meetings, and the human and social aspects of software engineering. In recent years she has studied data-driven digital transformation and how generative AI affects development work in large-scale agile organizations. She has led the research in several large projects, including Transformit, a research project on data-driven digital transformation with a total budget of more than 40 MNOK.
Stray is Deputy Head of the Department of Informatics and has served on the Department Board since 2020. She was previously the leader of the Software Engineering research group. In addition, she holds a position as Senior Researcher at SINTEF Digital, which she has held since 2017. She leads SE-Hub (Software Engineering Hub Norway), a national research network between UiO, NTNU, and SINTEF, and is a co-initiator and leader of the Gemini Centre for Software Engineering, a collaboration between the same institutions. She received a Ph.D. in informatics from UiO in 2014 and an MSc in computer science from NTNU in 2007. Before entering academia, she worked as an IT consultant at Accenture, including on one of Norway's largest software development projects.
Stray is a central figure in the international research community in empirical software engineering and agile software development, with numerous roles at leading conferences in the field. She is Program Co-Chair for PROFES in 2026, and has held several roles at the EASE conference: Program Co-Chair in 2025 and Most Influential Paper Award Co-Chair in 2026. She is Journal First Co-Chair for ESEM2026, and annually organizes the minitrack Agile Teams and Organizations in the Al Era Minitrack at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). She was academic Co-Chair for the XP conference (International Conference on Agile Software Development) in 2020 and 2022, and has served on its Steering Committee since 2020. In 2023 she was Sponsorship and Publicity Co-Chair for the 10th ACM Celebration of Women in Computing (womENcourage). She also holds more than 20 program committee memberships at international conferences.
Stray has several times been a guest editor for international journals, including IEEE Software, Information and Software Technology, AI & Society, and Business & Information Systems Engineering. She was recently a guest editor for a special issue on generative AI in software engineering in Information and Software Technology. She represents the Department of Informatics on the boards of the Centres for Research-based Innovation (SFI) Visual Intelligence and the Norwegian Research Center for AI Innovation (NorwAI).
On the teaching side, Stray has been the course leader for, and has taught, IN1030 Systems, Requirements and Consequences and IN2000 Software Engineering with Project Work. Together, these courses have more than 700 students. She has also taught IN5140 Smart Processes and Agile Methods in Software Engineering, and was for several years course leader for the continuing education course ITLED4350 Modern Software Development Processes. As Deputy Head she is now exempt from teaching duties, but still teaches in ITLED4350 and provides annual continuing education for the IT company Knowit. She is a certified coach and uses this actively in supervising master's and PhD students, and is a regular external examiner at NTNU, OsloMet, and the University of South-Eastern Norway.
Stray actively disseminates research in the media and has
repeatedly appeared on television and radio programs, including the TV2 series Norske tilstander. She is frequently interviewed by outlets such as Aftenposten, NRK, E24, Teknisk Ukeblad, Computerworld, forskning.no, and kode24.no, and is a sought-after speaker. In 2025 she was named one of Norway's 50 leading women in tech by Abelia and the ODA Network. She is a certified Scrum Master, ISTQB tester, and board member, and previously served on the board of the Norwegian Computer Society (Den norske dataforening).
