IT Interruption Using Goffman

Abstract

Contemporary knowledge workers collaborating in hybrid work environments need to frequently deal with ICT interruptions, which include interruptions originating from and mediated by ICTs. How do these interruptions affect the process of collaboration and how do the knowledge workers deal with such interruptions to keep their collaboration going without trouble? Past studies, for the most part, suggest that interruptions are likely to negatively affect group work processes and outcomes. Yet, we see that knowledge workers, in many instances, continue to collaborate seamlessly despite receiving ICT interruption. In other words, ICT interruptions do not always discernibly affect the collaborative process. In this paper, sensitized by concepts from Goffman’s work, we offer a novel understanding of how and why ICT interruptions are sometimes seamlessly handled and sometimes lead to hindered collaboration, and, in some extreme cases, to collaboration breakdowns.
