Secure Messaging

Messaging apps (like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and iMessage) are the predominant communication medium on mobile phones and have replaced, to a large extent, SMS messages and even phone calls. Most apps offer security mechanisms like end-to-end encryption or authentication, but these are mainly proprietary and do not allow exchange between different platforms. With the new EU Digital Market Act (DMA), large messaging platforms must allow users to communicate between different platforms. This interoperability applies also to the security mechanisms. This thesis aims to create an open, interoperable messaging system platform fulfilling the DMA requirements.

Exemplary tasks include: 

  • Analysis of open secure messaging system (e.g., Messaging Layer Security (MLS), Signal)
  • Requirement collection from regulations (e.g., DMA, GDPR)
  • Design of an open, interoperable messaging platform
  • Prototypical implementation
