Project Description
The student will use simulation tools (Geant4, SPENVIS) to model ASTRA-LEO’s detector response in Low Earth Orbit. The focus will be on background radiation modelling, shielding optimisation, and predicting detector sensitivity to different particle species.
Results will provide baseline predictions that support calibration and science planning.
Expected Work
• Develop Geant4 models of the ASTRA-LEO detector.
• Simulate responses to protons, electrons, gamma rays, and fast neutrons.
• Analyse background contributions and shielding effects.
• Compare simulation results with calibration data.
Learning Outcomes
Skills in radiation environment modelling, Monte Carlo simulations, and performance
optimisation of space-based detectors.
Thesis Type
Flexible: suitable as a short thesis (30 ECTS) if focused on one particle type or shielding study, or as a long thesis (60 ECTS) if expanded to a full multi-particle performance assessment.
