SANS instrument at IFE

SANS instrument atIFE

An upgraded SANS (Small Angle Neutron Scattering) instrument hasrecently been commissioned at the 2MW IFE reactor. The instrument is installedon a LH2-filled cold moderator (as is also our TOF apparatus), andis now equipped with a velocity selector (Dornier), providing a wavelengthrange of 4.5 to 11.5Å. Fast neutrons (below 4Å) and gamma radiationis removed by means of Be- and Bi- filters. The detector is a circular (58cmdiameter) 3He-filled RISØ-type detector that is translated inside a 3.5mlong shielded tank. The sample is mounted on a rotatable 7-position thermallycontrolled stage located inside a steel chamber. The chamber can be evacuatedin order to reduce air scattering, and also for working with air sensitivesamples. The q-range for this instrument is 0.007-0.32Å-1.Beamtime is allocated on a collaborative basis. Annual reactor shut-downs arefrom first week of July through the first week of August, Christmas, New Yearand Easter.
